Lucas Niggli Drum Quartet: Beat Bag Bohemia
this quartet explore the history of percussion music - and then way beyond.
„Judging by the percentage of drummers per inhabitant you might call Switzerland the most African country in Europe“, sleevnote writer Chrostoph Wagner quips, and Beat Bag Bohemia proves his point.
Lucas Niggli is a founding member of Improv collective Steamboat Switzerland, but this quartet explore the history of percussion music, from ist African roots to jazz. Between them, Rolando Lamussene, Kesivan Naidoo and Peter Conradin Zumthor cover the whole spectrum of gongs, drums, cymbals, miscellaneous knick-knacks and pitched percussion. „Big Bertha“ contains a gorgeously nuanced vocal recitation from Lamussene, accompanied by gentle thumb pianos, and represents the group at its most pan-African. „Shweet My Brooh“ builds on the foundations of jazz swing, with rhythmic interplay that pushes towards bop and then way beyond.
